A mixed-methods approach was deployed including a cross-sectional online survey of RASSO officers and a qualitative study involving in-depth interviews in one English Police Force Area. Findings show that organisational policies have little salience. There is an entrenched culture of continuing to work despite being unwell, to provide operational support for colleagues. There is a need to develop specific strategies that reduce the stress for a team or unit-level for this cohort of police officers. Crime records for the period 2011–2016 were point-level geo-coded. Appropriate data manipulation by methods described in the text. The data were geo-visualised, yielding clear spatial clustering of crime. The areas of high crime concentration include large part of Mall Road, Canal Bank Road and Jail Road with its link roads and surroundings. These are non-residential areas and the hub of retail business and educational activities and also have health and recreational facilities. This study provides a suitable approach to the identification of urban crime hotspots. It informs police deployment decisions and policy on crime control strategies. The aim of this article is to show how IAGs are shaping a subculture of criminal intelligence through the main dynamics structuring CHIS management. Following a literature review, the first part of this paper contextualises the promotion of human intelligence in criminal units and presents the mixed approach employed. The second part demonstrates how handlers’ practices are geared toward two processes – the exploratory gathering of information followed by cleansing of such information – and require high availability, acting via three skills (cognitive, memory and empathy). The third part presents how two dimensions underpinning the handlers’ commitment (a shared belief regarding secrecy as being useful and partial autonomy) are directed through use of the ‘gray zone’ between judicial and administrative actions in order to enable judicial action.
