Since July 2019 officers have taken possession of 526 digital devices in order to secure evidence through cyber-kiosks. These are computers with software that allows trained officers to see what is stored on a smartphone or tablet. Police can only use this technology with consent, which is given in most cases, or with a warrant from the Crown Office or a legislative power. In 104 cases, officers used lawful authority in the absence of consent, although this equated to only 2 per cent of the total number of rape and sexual assault offences being investigated during this time.
