Based on this idea, this article examines the world view of uniformed British police officers seeking to understand whether their uniform impacts on their attitudes and behaviours. Using data from a survey of 91 uniformed officers, results suggest that their uniform does indeed affect how they behave and their perceptions of self. Recommendations are made for changes to uniforms with the intent to reduce assaults by and against officers and complaints, as well as increase morale and productivity. This scheme is part of the Rapid Action Groups for Surveillance and Intervention in the Sahel Project; an EU initiative for improving the effectiveness of national security forces in counterterrorism actions and policing the territory and its borders. Considering the short, intensive and residential nature of the programme, we use a before-after study design to determine the scheme’s causal effects on participants’ marksmanship skills and physical fitness. Our findings suggest that this scheme has a highly positive impact on these dimensions, even though the benefits differ across participants. Security Journal 19/6/2023 Research article Child sexual exploitation and the adoption of public health approaches to prevention: critical reflections on evolving processes and practices In recent years, the use of public health approaches to address complex social problems has gained popularity. In England and Wales, the rise in low-volume, high-harm crime has accelerated this shift, with calls for public health interventions to tackle knife-crime, extremism and sexual violence made by politicians, policy-makers, welfare workers and the police service. Notwithstanding such appeals, how public health approaches are both operationalised and impact remain largely unknown. Drawing on findings from a qualitative study focused on the implementation of a specific initiative in the UK designed to reduce the risk of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) amongst young people, this article attempts to address tangible gaps in these two key areas of knowledge. Although generally supportive of a public health approach to CSE, an analysis of in-depth interviews with members of a multi-agency team reveals a number of quandaries and thorny issues when implemented within a specific policing and criminal justice context. A staff report, which goes before the community services committee on June 27, proposes an alternative emergency number to 911 and a 24-hour community based response team of mental health professionals and civilian support workers. If approved, the pilot will be rolled out in the summer of 2024 in one neighbourhood before expanding. The neighbourhood has not yet been chosen.
