UKAuthority.com 2/10/2023 News Improving Violent Extremism Risk Communication among German Police Agencies: A Survey of Federal and State Threat Managers The effective communication of the risk of violent extremism using either numerical or semantic systems represents an important challenge for police agencies. The aim of the present study was to examine the perceived usefulness of an 8-category risk communication scheme widely used by German police. An online survey was completed by members of both federal as well as state police threat management teams throughout the country (N = 158). Results suggest that threat managers perceive the use of a common risk communication scheme to be crucial for successful cooperation across different police agencies to prevent acts of violent extremism. However, it was also found that threat managers do not share a mutual understanding of the meaning behind the eight risk categories in the present scheme. The authors review established best practices in the nomothetic and idiographic communication of risk and make constructive recommendations about how to improve the utility of the currently used system. If these recommendations are implemented, they could result in more effective preventative efforts by threat management teams collaborating throughout Germany, with positive implications for public safety and national security. Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology 2/10/2023 Research article Social and Organizational Perception Toward Women Police: A Study of Metropolitan Police in Developing Country This study has examined the societal and organizational attitudes toward female police currently working in the Sylhet Metropolitan area of Bangladesh. To better understand the actual scenario of women police in the Metropolitan area, this study interviewed 13 field-level officials using purposive sampling from the Sylhet Metropolitan area through a semi-structured questionnaire. The study found that society’s mental inertia and behavioral attitudes toward women have had a significant impact on the current situation of female cops in metropolitan police. The public still does not comprehend women working in such outfits, and women have to face a variety of struggles to join the force as well. Besides, as part of their societal responsibilities, they must forego a variety of career opportunities for the sake of their children and families. They often face physical difficulties with their tasks, and their male counterparts do not always accept them easily at the job; there is even a little stink of sexual harassment within the department. Although organizational facilities have been increased in many areas following the positive attitudes, there are still some problems regarding daycare centers, maternal leave, and separate washroom facilities. Thus, the study recommends improving their existing facilities based on female cops’ capabilities. CRIMRXIV 2/10/2023 Research article Analysing the Levels of Fear of Crime Before and After the Implementation of Security Box: a Community Policing Case Study in Chiba Prefecture, Japan Community policing plays an important role in Japanese policing. One prefecture in Japan installed a security box to facilitate community-based crime prevention activities, encouraging interactive partnerships with community neighbours. This study aimed to determine the time-course impact of the implementation of the security box on fear of crime. A questionnaire survey was conducted before, immediately after, and a few years after the implementation of the security box at two different locations. A series of analyses revealed that (1) the number of respondents who knew about the security box, passed by the security box, and saw security advisors staffed at the security box increased from immediately after the introduction to three and a half years after the introduction, (2) levels of fear of crime increased from Wave 1 to Wave 3, and (3) the security box was not associated with levels of fear of crime. Although this study did not provide empirical support for the effects of the security box on lowering fear, many respondents expect its effectiveness in improving neighbourhood safety and community crime prevention; moreover, it is necessary to determine its long-term impact.
