Policing Insight - Subscription at source 11/8/2023 Analysis, Feature Can police de-escalation training reduce use of force and citizen injury without compromising officer safety? Objectives: We test the impact of de-escalation training on the behavior of officers in the Tempe (AZ) Police Department. Methods: The training was delivered via a squad-based randomized controlled trial. We examine administrative use of force data and body-worn camera footage for all use of force encounters six months pre- and post-training. Outcomes include prevalence and force types used, encounter duration, and citizen and officer injuries. Outcomes: Use of force declined for Treatment and Control squads, likely because of the global pandemic. Trained officers decreased use of certain force types likely to produce injury. Trained officers spent significantly more time on scene, and they were 58% less likely to injure community members. These changes occurred with no increased risk of officer injury. Conclusions: The differences in key outcomes are consistent with a positive training effect. Factors that may explain the results include the curriculum development process, focus on officer safety/wellness, officer receptivity, and use of refresher trainings. Journal of Experimental Criminology - Subscription at source 11/8/2023 Research article Fear of crime and the willingness to report crime to police: A case study of model policing in Meta-Mercado, Coatepeque, Guatemala Community-oriented policing has been a mainstay of policing over the past quarter century. In March 2019, the municipality of Coatepeque in Guatemala, with the assistance of Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International, implemented a new community policing plan called Vivir y Prosperar in the Meta Mercado. Vivir y Prosperar was designed to improve security, reduce crime, and promote economic prosperity. This study utilises the pre-test, baseline and 6-months post-test, endline survey data of market vendors in the Meta Mercado to assess whether Vivir y Prosperar reduced fear of crime and increased someone’s willingness to report crime to police as tenets of community policing would anticipate. Results show that Vivir and Prosperar did not directly contribute to a decrease in fear of crime or improve one’s willingness to report crimes to the police. However, improving personal victimisation experiences, bribery payments, and other factors may indirectly promote a reduction in fear of crime and increase the willingness to report a crime among market vendors. International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice 11/8/2023 Research article More consistency needed across policing to better prevent homicide, report finds While most police forces effectively identify patterns and causes of homicide, and allocate the right resources to prevent it, there is still too much “inconsistency” in how policing takes steps to prevent it, a new report has found.
