Blue Line (Canada) 24/7/2023 Feature, Opinion Mental Health Providers and Peers Help Enhance the Effectiveness of Law Enforcement Mental Health Interventions In the line of duty, law enforcement officers are exposed to various stressors. Therefore, they are vulnerable to the onset of mental health disorders. Unfortunately, many officers in need may not readily seek out mental health assistance because of the stigma associated with mental illness that persists within the culture of law enforcement. Psychoeducation and a judgment-free environment can reduce the stigma surrounding mental health treatment. Though both mental health professional (MHP)-led programs and peer-led support programs for law enforcement do help, we argue that neither one on its own is enough to combat stigma and increase treatment access and adherence. Therefore, we argue that a model that incorporates both peer-led initiatives and the expertise of mental health professionals may help dispel stigma, increase trust, and increase service use among law enforcement officers. Following a discussion of the theoretical basis for a hybrid model, we describe the Texas Post-Critical Incident Seminar (PCIS) program as a real-world application of a hybrid model. Methods: We designed a simplified notice of police bail using principles from behavioural science. The simplified notice reduced the required reading age of the front page by 2 years and included a clear call to action and simplified information. We rolled the notice out across six police stations in New Zealand and tested the impact with a cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) (n = 1542, with clustering by custody officer). We also conducted interviews with defendants and staff, and conducted a survey with staff, to gain additional insights into the barriers to court attendance. Results: Our results suggest the simplified notice increased court attendance by 3.6 percentage points (p Cambridge Journal of Evidence-Based Policing 24/7/2023 Research article Dublin City Council to meet top garda amid rise in violent city centre attacks REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Dublin City Council will meet with the Assistant Garda Commissioner this afternoon to discuss the rise in anti-social behaviour in Dublin city centre. Studying burnout is vital to building support systems that can help women thrive in law enforcement. The findings show that a substantial number of women officers experience exhaustion and depersonalization and that reducing job demands, discrimination, and tokenism are critically important to reducing burnout. The results also highlight the potentially detrimental consequences of burnout, particularly depersonalization, on attitudes about misconduct and physical force, as well as commitment to the organization. We conclude by discussing how organizations can reduce burnout among women officers by changing policies and practices to place a concern for diversity and equality for women at the center of police culture. Women and Criminal Justice 24/7/2023 Research article Police Body-Worn Cameras as a Response to Domestic and Family Violence: Practitioner Insights Into the Consequences for Victim/Survivors Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have been promoted internationally to enhance responses to domestic and family violence (DFV). However, little is known about their utility, benefits, and limitations. Drawing upon the insights of DFV practitioners who support victim/survivors in the Australian states of Queensland and Western Australia, this article finds that while BWCs can capture some DFV incidents, they are unable to show their full context and impacts. BWC footage may also have consequences for “nonideal” victim/survivors, including wrongful criminalization and the removal of children. Ultimately, we argue that trauma-informed responses are vital for BWC use in DFV cases to improve frontline responses. Violence Against Women 24/7/2023 Research article How do law enforcement agencies recruit diverse applicants? Analysis of digital recruiting materials Law enforcement agencies across the country are struggling to recruit qualified candidates and this problem is pronounced when recruiting demographically diverse officers. Women demonstrate competencies important for effective policing: restoring trust in police, obtaining high case clearance rates, and using less force. The goal of this study was to understand how agencies use online recruiting materials to recruit women officers. We assessed the frequency of text, images, and videos depicting women and racially and ethnically diverse individuals, and content related to hiring and the job itself. We conducted thematic analysis to understand how policing, the agency, and diversity were portrayed. Characteristics known to discourage women applicants were highlighted prominently in materials. Agencies did not provide consistent messaging about diversity, resources for women, or support for work–life balance. We found differences between agencies with higher and lower percentages of women, but they were inconsistent and often in unexpected directions.
