Indeed, much of what is known about the effects of proactive policing on crime comes from studies that evaluated highly focused interventions atypical of day-to-day policing, used cities as the unit of analysis, or could not rule out endogeneity. This study addresses each of these issues, thereby advancing the evidence base concerning the effects of policing on crime. Leveraging two exogenous shocks presented by the onset of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and social unrest after the murder of George Floyd, we evaluated the effects of sudden and sustained reductions in high-discretion policing on crime at the neighborhood level in Denver, Colorado. Multilevel models accounting for trends in prior police activity, neighborhood structure, seasonality, and population mobility revealed mixed results. On the one hand, large-scale reductions in stops and drug-related arrests were associated with significant increases in violent and property crimes, respectively. On the other hand, fewer disorder arrests did not affect crime. These results were not universal across neighborhoods. We discuss the implications of these findings in light of debates concerning the appropriate role of policing in the 21st century. Law Society Gazette Ireland 9/2/2024 News Assessment of a domestic violence telecare protection system from the victims’ perspective This article presents an evaluative study of the telecare protection system (TPS) implemented in Portugal as a protection order for domestic violence victims. A survey was applied to a representative sample of victims who were supported by the system (N = 171) and their responses were compared with those of domestic violence victims who did not benefit from it (N = 100). Victims were asked about their: (i) knowledge, expectations, and experiences with the implementation of the system; (ii) assessment of agencies’ activities, and (iii) levels of satisfaction, safety, and re-victimisation. TPS had an activation rate of 32% for emergencies. Victims with the TPS showed great expectation fulfilment and a very positive assessment of the demeanour and behaviour of police and other support agencies. Generally, very satisfied with the system, victims reported, however, relatively lower satisfaction with the police responses in specific emergencies. Victims reported that the actions of agencies involved in the system allow them to feel safer; nonetheless, they also reported stable and continued fear and risk of being victimised. Finally, victims benefiting from TPS significantly differed from victims who did not benefit from it in terms of physical re-victimisation (7% and 15%, respectively). European Journal of Criminology - Subscription at source 9/2/2024 Research article A Link Between the George Floyd Incident and De-Policing: Evidence From Police Arrests Across Three Racial and Ethnic Groups The purpose of this study is to examine the George Floyd effect on depolicing. Police misdemeanor and felony arrests by the Houston Police Department (HPD), with these police actions serve as the primary measures of law enforcement behavior. Specifically, we break down police misdemeanor and felony arrests among Hispanic, Black, and White residents. An Interrupted Time Series Analysis model is used in the analysis. The primary findings suggest that there was an initial steep drop of police arrests immediately after the Floyd incident for both misdemeanor and felony arrests. The long-term effect, however, remains present in only misdemeanant arrests. Police felony arrests went back to pre-incident levels within a short period of time. In addition, it is noted that the pattern of arrests between Blacks and Hispanics is similar. Some policy implications and the limitations of the study are discussed in a concluding section.
