Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) 22/2/2024 News Causes of Police Officer Career Apprehension Following George Floyd Police workforce retention has become a persistent managerial concern. The public response to recent events of police misconduct have fuelled the perception that police may be seeking other career paths following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Despite growing evidence, current research has been unable to ascertain what conditions may prompt officers to voluntarily separate from police work following Floyd’s murder, or whether the impact varies across demographic groups. Drawing upon a survey of over 600 police officers across eight police departments in the United States, the current inquiry examines what percent of officers reported reconsidering their career following the George Floyd incident, and whether demographic information and occupational attitudes could predict whether officers reconsidered their careers. Findings indicated that female officers were more likely to strongly agree that it made them reconsider their careers, and that instrumental concerns (i.e., public support, personal liability, localized fallout, and concern over media attention) were also influential. BBC 22/2/2024 News MARTIN GALLAGHER: If our police don’t tackle minor crime, then worse will follow The proposed Scotland-wide extension of a controversial pilot project where minor crimes were not investigated is nothing short of a disastrous decision. In euphemistic language, it is billed as a ‘proportionate’ response to crime, but it brings into sharp focus an important question: ‘What exactly are the police for?’ The trial, which took place in the NorthEast of Scotland, is being hailed as a ‘success’ and will likely be rolled out across the nation – though the evaluation report has yet to be published. Mail Online 22/2/2024 Feature, Opinion Police Scotland waves white flag on minor crime Police will no longer investigate every crime reported to them in Scotland, the Mail can reveal. Top brass have given the green light to the soft-touch scheme after claiming a controversial pilot project in the North-East was a success. Mail Online 22/2/2024 News ‘When you own the time, it’s seamless, but when you don’t, it’s horrific’: critical, public order and major incident decision-making in policing On 24 May 2022, a gunman entered an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas and fatally shot 19 victims. During the incident, local police were present at the site but did not enter the building to confront the gunman. It was subsequently reported that an Incident Commander mischaracterised the situation as a ‘barricaded subject’ rather than as an ‘active shooter’, and officers were ordered to stay out of the scene and to keep student families and bystanders from entering the building. Drawing on qualitative interviews with Incident Commanders, Critical Incident Commanders, Emergency Planners, and Tactical and Public Order Unit personnel, our research seeks to better understand the influence of various stressors on decision-making in high-risk, high-profile events. This paper presents an analysis of these interviews that considers four important questions: 1. Who becomes an IC? 2. What is the function of an IC during a major, critical, and public order incident? 3. What factors influence IC decision-making? and 4. What are the sources of stress involved in IC decision-making and work?
