Government of Ireland 20/10/2023 News Procedural Justice, Perceived Legitimacy, and Reoffending Behavior: In Police and Court Setting Despite the increasing body of procedural justice research studying individuals involved in the criminal justice system, this strand of literature has used different approaches to measure procedural justice and legitimacy. The present study assesses the different theoretical assumptions of these approaches across two criminal justice settings, namely, policing and courts. In addition, we examine how procedural justice stemming from interactions with police officers and judges is related to legitimacy and reoffending behavior postrelease. Using data on adult detainees who entered Dutch pretrial detention centers, our findings support the theoretical assumptions regarding procedural justice and felt obligation to obey the law in both criminal justice settings. Furthermore, path analyses show that perceptions of procedural justice arising from encounters with police officers and judges are related to a higher sense of obligation to obey the law, which in turn is associated with a lower risk of reoffending. This is particularly important since public opinion about DUI and its enforcement has changed since the 1980’s. Thus, this project examines how structural factors associated with alcohol norms such as anti-alcohol religious populations, county prohibition of alcohol sales, and large universities with athletic programs are related to change in DUI enforcement from 1985—2014. The results indicate that pro-alcohol measures such as large universities and pro-alcohol religion are related to decreased DUI enforcement, and anti-alcohol religious population are associated with increased enforcement levels. Overall, these findings support the argument that the change in DUI enforcement may be conditioned by the informal norms relating to alcohol in each community. American Journal of Criminal Justice 20/10/2023 Research article Outcome 22 (O22) Guidance 2022 V3.5 The aim of this guidance document is to provide a framework for police and other practitioners for the use of Outcome 22 (O22). Outcome 22 is the Home Office outcome code, intended to reflect where a diversionary intervention has been used to result a case that does not meet the public interest test to take any further action. It is an informal outcome that results in an NFA, for use with both adult and youth cases. At the time of writing, the use of this outcome code is not consistently applied by all forces across England and Wales. Whilst it is not currently measured as positive action taken by Forces, its use in terms of diverting offenders from future criminality cannot be over-stated. With consistent use of this outcome by forces it may change the position on how it is measured. Given the positive benefits derived from effective diversionary work, the lack of a positive detection should not deter you from using outcome 22.
