Cambridge University to hold largest Evidence-Based Policing Conference in its history

University of Cambridge Evidence-Based Policing Conference

The Institute of Criminology will host the annual Cambridge University Evidence-Based Policing Conference at the Cambridge Corn Exchange from July 21 to 22, 2025. This year’s conference promises to be the largest one yet, with at least 500 delegates in attendance and 20 top keynote speakers.

Led by Professor Barak Ariel, Director of the MSt in Applied Criminology and Police Management, it brings together researchers and practitioners from across law enforcement to discuss evidence-based policing from both academic and operational perspectives.

This is a unique opportunity to hear insights from speakers with unparalleled knowledge and expertise on current challenges in policing

This year’s headline speakers include researchers from top universities and leaders in policing. Lawrence Sherman, Wolfson Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Criminology, will discuss moving evidence-based policing forward using ‘Triple T analytics’ for assessing policing methods.

Sir Andy Marsh, Chief Executive Officer of the College of Policing, will discuss the role the College plays in researching and implementing evidence-based policing. Alex Murray, Chair of the UK Society of Evidence-Based Policing and a Director in the National Crime Agency, will discuss the latest in AI and serious and organised crime.

Professor David Weisburd from George Mason University will expand on this issue by explaining how to advance place-based evidence-based policing.

We also have Ben Bradford from University College London, who will explore public confidence in policing and methods to improve it and Jonathan Jackson from the London School of Economics, who will lay out the crime terrain for the foreseeable future, given recent technological changes.

Other speakers will discuss violence prevention, organised crime, deterrence theory, fraud, and the potential of artificial intelligence and the subsequent risks this may pose. Speakers will explore evidence-based policing on local, national, and international scales. This will provide context for different policing practices, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of their applicability by law enforcement, the private sector, and scholars alike.

This conference will provide invaluable insight into practical strategies for evidence-based policing, with knowledge unique to this conference. Attendees will also have an unparalleled opportunity to build networks within academia and policing. The conference will be accompanied by a gala dinner at the Guildhall, which attendees are invited to attend (very limited seats now available).
