Transforming Criminal Justice – People, Prevention, Prisons
(Ended 15th Oct 2024)
In-person
15th Oct 2024 to 15th Oct 2024
Tuesday 15th October 2024, 45 Maple Street, London, UK
The Criminal Justice System in the UK requires major reform. This is a key priority for the new government, but a plan to build more prisons is not the only answer. Cityforum is developing this forum to explore the purpose of the criminal justice system and the opportunities that exist to recreate it.
The day will consider what needs to change in the prison system and probation service; the case for restorative justice; the role of the police in a transformed system, and the technological advancements that could drive change. We will consider case studies from abroad and discuss innovation and new ideas that would help to alleviate the backlog of cases and low prosecution rates, as well as the high level of reoffending. We hope to be able to assess the future of punishment, deterrence, prevention and reform in a way that helps secure public acceptance because of its fairness, acceptable costs and beneficial outcomes. The challenges are wide and multi-faceted, and changes will need to be implemented carefully and with a limited budget.
Cityforum intends to deliver a realistic event with practical outcomes. Join us for this high-level discussion on one of the UK’s most wicked and urgent challenges.
