According to the latest figures published by the Office for National Statistics, police forces in England and Wales have recorded the highest number of crimes in 20 years; knife crime, drug-related offences and county lines are on the rise in many parts of the UK. Despite national efforts to prevent and tackle gang activity, criminal networks are increasingly recruiting vulnerable young people as they are more likely to evade police detection. This has only been exacerbated in recent years, as gangs have taken advantage of the pandemic to target vulnerable children and expand their criminal activity, according to Barnardo’s. Now is the time to come together and share best practice in developing multi-agency solutions to disrupt gang activity and protect children from criminal exploitation.

  • There were around 210,000 drug offences recorded by the police in England and Wales in 2020/21
  • According to the Office for National Statistics, there has been a 10% increase in knife-enabled crime in the past year
  • Figures from the National Crime Agency reveal that there are currently over 2,000 county lines across the UK
  • In 2020/21, 12,720 children in England were identified as being at risk of criminal exploitation by gangs, according to the Department for Education
