The challenges of Policing in responding to digital evidence are well documented in research and practice. The National Police Science, Technology and Research Network awarded funding to Cumbria Constabulary to undertake a two phase research project on the issues of responding to digital evidence during investigations. This conference will take a first responders view on the issue. Thompson et al. (2021) identified from a 96-case sample that 50% of enquiries missed digital investigative opportunities.

The National Police Chief Council’s digital forensic strategy highlights that over 90% of recorded crime now has a digital element (NPCC, 2020). Research highlights that despite the increasing prevalence of digital evidence in investigation numerous barriers e.g. technical issues, communication issues and lack of training hinder using these opportunities to their full potential (Wilson-Kovacs, 2021). The overall aim of this conference is to share knowledge, practice and understanding around this sometimes complex but constantly evolving issues.
