Gun violence can be reduced with a strategy focused on deterrence

OPINION: While Canada has experienced an increase in gun violence in recent years, Professor Yanick Charette of the Université Laval believes that existing political and law enforcement approaches to tackle the problem focus mainly on increasing police resources, and should be replaced by more effective deterrent programs, built on interventions that involve both the police and the community.

Profile
Professor Yanick Charette holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate in criminology from the University of Montreal, and a post-doctorate in sociology from Yale. Now an associate professor at the School of Social Work and Criminology at Laval University, his focus is in the intersection of the health and justice systems and their involvement in the life trajectories of people in the criminal justice system with a mental health problem. His other interests focus on the dynamic and social processes of delinquency, and interconnections between those involved in the justice system, both offenders and interveners.
