ANALYSIS: Forced marriage affects millions of people around the world from many different cultures, and forced marriage protection orders (FMPOs) were introduced in England and Wales to prevent such crimes; but new research by Prof Sundari Anitha and Prof Aisha K Gill shows that the legal tools currently available fall seriously short of protecting victims of forced marriage from further abuse.

Profile
Professor Sundari Anitha is Professor of Gender, Violence and Work at the University of Lincoln. She completed her PhD in Politics of Culture at SOAS, University of London in 2003, having previously achieved a BA(Hons) in Political Science, at Delhi University, and an MA in Political Studies, from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Prof Anitha’s research, publications and teaching interests lie across two main areas – violence against women, and gender and work. She has previously managed a Women’s Aid refuge for survivors of domestic violence, and has been active in policy-making and addressing violence against women since 2000.
