OPINION: Being a police officer was Sam Smith’s dream job, but when his mental health began to suffer as a result of his career choice, the lack of resilience training and minimal support meant the dream turned sour; now the former Hertfordshire PC has launched the Green Ribbon Policing campaign, calling for a mandatory national standard for mental health within policing.

Sam started his working life in sales, before converting his communication and problem solving skills and joining the police service as a frontline police officer. Sam now works in the charity sector for Barnados, undertaking support and safeguarding work with children that are reported missing and are at risk of exploitation. He is also the founder of Green Ribbon Policing, a campaign for better mental health in policing. The campaign aims to get a mandatory national standard of mental health wellbeing for all police officers.
