Roy began his career in the fire service in 1981, starting in Hornsey, North London which led on to various roles in North London and the West End. Since then, Roy has had a prolific role within the fire service that included project lead for the restructure of London Fire Brigade in 2001, then taking up the position of Assistant Commissioner for Community Fire Safety in London in 2002. In 2004 Roy joined Hertfordshire as Deputy Chief Fire Officer and in 2005 Roy was appointed Chief Fire Officer. In April 2011 Roy took up the role of Director for Community Protection and Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire, taking responsibility for Trading Standards, Emergency Planning and the County Community Safety Unit. In April 2013 Roy was also appointed Chief Executive of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.
