ANALYSIS: Historically low reporting and conviction rates for rape and sexual assault in the UK and elsewhere remain a significant cause for concern; Pragya Agarwal, Visiting Professor of Social Inequities and Injustice at Loughborough University, believes that proper training in rape myths – and greater awareness for officers and juries around unconscious biases against sexual assault survivors – are essential if women are to trust the system enough to report more offences.

Pragya Agarwal is a Professor of Social Inequities at Loughborough University, and a visiting fellow at University of Oxford. Following a PhD from the University of Nottingham, Pragya held the prestigious Leverhulme Fellowship and has held senior academic positions and visiting fellowships at various US and UK universities. Pragya is the author of a number of scholarly articles and four non-fiction books on gender inequality, feminism, racism and reproductive justice. She is a two-time TEDx speaker, a TEDx Woman organiser, and makes regular expert appearances on many international shows and podcasts including BBC Women’s Hour, Sky News, Australian Broadcasting Service, and Canadian Radio.
