Bearing witness: Why eyewitness IDs can be more reliable than you think

ANALYSIS: Many people believe that eyewitness identification is inherently unreliable, and this belief is reflected in scholarly articles, textbooks, and juror briefings. Laura Mickes argues that not only are eyewitness IDs potentially more reliable than commonly assumed, but that small changes to criminal justice procedure could significantly increase the reliability of such testimony.

Dr Mickes is a Reader in the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London and a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, San Diego. Her research mainly involves the theoretical understanding and advancement of human memory, and applied aspects of human memory. One line of such research is aimed at investigating and improving eyewitness identifications. She has a PhD in Cognitive Science and Experimental Psychology from the University of California, San Diego.
