OPINION: With many countries taking a new approach to legalising and regulating prostitution, the Australian state of Victoria is carrying out a full review of its sex work laws; Dr Larissa Sandy, Senior Lecturer at RMIT University, believes fully decriminalising sex work is the best way forward.

Dr Larissa Sandy is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology & Justice Studies at RMIT University. She specialises in sex work and human trafficking, having researched with sex workers in Australia and Asia-Pacific for almost twenty years and has published widely on the issue. Larissa has just completed a large-scale project on the career development needs of sex workers in Victoria, which included working with a team of sex worker peer researchers. Dr Sandy was a prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Criminology at Flinders University, with her work exploring Cambodia’s human trafficking laws.
