OPINION: Police officers are regularly expected to use their discretion, policing skills and street craft to achieve the best outcomes for communities and the wider public; but Policing Lecturer and former police sergeant Barrie Archer fears that finding ways to ‘get the job done’ and make a broken system work can lead to noble cause corruption – or worse.

Barrie Archer is a Lecturer in Policing at the University of Derby, working in partnership with Derbyshire Police and Nottinghamshire Police to deliver the Police Constable Degree Program. He previously worked as a Warwickshire Police Sergeant until injury forced him into early retirement. He then obtained a first-class law degree and a distinction at Masters, and is currently studying for a PhD where his research focuses on violence in sport. His first publication – Police procedure and evidence in the criminal justice system – is due for release before the end of 2022. In his spare time Barrie is the Vice Chair of the board for the English Ice Hockey Association.
