Alison Lyle is a Research Fellow at CENTRIC (Centre of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence and Organised Crime Research), part of Sheffield Hallam University and leads on legal and ethical matters. Alison’s 11 years with West Yorkshire Police, up to 2017, included several years building prosecution cases and time as a police legal advisor
with the Police National Legal Database (PNLD).
Since joining CENTRIC, Alison has published several book chapters on legal issues relating to police work and has created a series of 10 data protection guides for the Police and Crime Commissioners’ Offices across England and Wales, to whom she continues to offer guidance.She also provides legal and ethical guidance to several EU funded and other projects. In addition to legal work, Alison is currently the coordinator of a large EU funded project and recently managed a regional project, collaborating with the Yorkshire and Humber Cyber Crime Unit. This work was recently awarded two National Cyber Awards (2019). Alison also led on the development of a new master’s degree for Sheffield Hallam, in international security management, which aims to start in January 2020. Alison holds an LL.B(Hons) law degree, a Postgraduate Diploma in Criminology and is currently engaged in a PhD exploring police cybercrime investigations. She is a member of the National Association of Data Protection Officers and a Fellow of the Institute of Paralegals; she is also a member of EDEN, the Law Enforcement Data Protection Officer Network at Europol.
