Remembering fallen officers on National Police Memorial Day

Kent PCC Ann Barnes reflects on this Sunday's event to mark police bravery and sacrifice

The bravery and sacrifice of police officers will be remembered this Sunday (27 September) on National Police Memorial Day.

Sunday’s event will take place in Edinburgh, and here in Kent I’ll be honoured to attend the force’s own memorial service on Monday 28 September to particularly remember our local colleagues who have died in the line of duty.

National Police Memorial Day was founded by a serving Kent Police officer, following the tragic death of a colleague while he was on duty in Margate in December 2000.

This was a truly horrific event, and a sad day for his family, friends and colleagues. He is not forgotten.

But – thanks to National Police Memorial Day – we all have an opportunity to show the sacrifice made by fallen officers across the country who also will never, ever be forgotten.

It is a special day which brings the whole of the policing family together.

We’ll remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty as well as recognising the dedication to duty of all our brave police officers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe places to live, work and visit.

They will, of course, be in my thoughts on Sunday. I look forward to paying my respects – as I do every year – and hope that people across the country will take a minute this Sunday to do the same.
