Navigating the next generation of policing: ANZPAA Police Conference 2022 in person or online

ANZPAA PC22

Presented by the Australian and New Zealand Police Commissioners and supported by Policing Insight as Global Media Partner, this 2-day ANZPAA Police Conference 2022 (PC22) will demonstrate how innovation can be used to ‘navigate the next generation of policing’.

The conference will focus on how police can partner with government, other police, academia and industry to best combat the pervasive issues that face our communities. For the first time, the ANZPAA Police Conference is offering virtual tickets and is open to international delegates.

Top cops focused on partnerships and innovation

ANZPAA CEO Dr Tracey Green said, “The highlight for 2022 is going to be the variety of presentations that focus on how police can use technology to fight crime nationally and internationally. As we know, the criminal landscape is rapidly changing, and we have some initiatives to share that address complex questions we face globally.”

Presentations include a spotlight on international police partnerships through Operation Ironside. This Australian Federal Police (AFP) led investigation, partnered with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and involved Australian state and territory police. The operation was a three-year covert investigation into significant organised crime syndicates that were using a dedicated encrypted communications device, named AN0M, to traffic illicit drugs and weapons to Australia, as well as order local executions.

“The law enforcement community around the world is facing similar challenges, particularly around cyber-crime and transnational serious organised crime. It requires a collaborative international approach using fresh ideas to tackle crime,” said Dr Green.

The AN0M platform, secretly controlled by the FBI, has provided Australian police jurisdictions with invaluable intelligence and insight that has never been obtained before by Australian law enforcement. When the AN0M platform was shut down in June 2021, about 19 million messages captured from the platform related to Australia.

In another world first partnership, PC22 will highlight police collaboration with online dating apps to address the rise in sexual assaults. Led by Queensland Police, the first campaign partnered with Match group. Match Group own and operate over 45 global dating services such as Tinder, Hinge and Match.com. The campaign developed preventative messaging for app users so that they can recognise warning signs and report or find support. The Queensland Police project is the first of a tranche of ANZPAA projects on sharing intelligence and partnering with industry to address online-initiated sexual violence.

Other sessions will focus on police mental health, innovation, police leadership, recruitment, first nations communities and emerging criminal activities. PC22 will examine how to develop strategies for supporting the front line and build future-ready police forces.

For the first time, the ANZPAA Police Conference is offering virtual tickets and is open to international delegates. All sessions from the plenary sessions will be live-streamed and available for viewing online after the conference.

The Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) is the policy and research agency for policing, working directly for Police Commissioners across Australia and New Zealand. They provide police in Australia and New Zealand with strategic foresight, research and policy advice.
