Uni of Buckingham

Postgraduate courses designed around work commitments for aspiring security professionals and the next generation of police and law enforcement leaders. Find out more about PG Cert/MA in Transnational Organised Crime and the PG Cert in Law Enforcement Security and Intelligence at the University of Buckingham’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (BUCSIS).

The University of Buckingham’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies (BUCSIS) has been running academic programmes in all aspects of security and intelligence, from undergraduate to PhD, since 2008. A particular focus throughout this period has been designing and delivering courses not just for standard students, but also for professionals keen to develop their deeper strategic awareness, and their skills in such areas as research, analysis, critical thinking and communications.

It has been really noticeable how much the course has helped in the workplace, particularly with critical thinking and policy communications

Headed by a former practitioner of many years in UK intelligence, Professor Julian Richards, BUCSIS is uniquely positioned to make the connections between the academic and the professional. Testimonials from numerous security professionals over the years have highlighted the tremendous practical skills developed through out courses, which make a real difference to career enhancement.

In the Law Enforcement realm, two programmes are particularly suited to police and the wider community of law enforcement officers who wish to fit an academic programme around their jobs in a flexible way:

The PG Cert/MA in Transnational Organised Crime represents an initial six months of study (leading to a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) qualification), covering two taught modules in Transnational Organised Crime Threats; and Policing Organised Crime. Teaching is conducted at the Buckingham campus in three intensive weekend sessions in each of the two terms, allowing for minimal disruption to the day-job. For those wishing to go on to a full Master’s degree, the MA can be attained through completion of a major research project, conducted through remote supervision. APPLY HERE

The PG Cert in Law Enforcement Security and Intelligence (by distance learning) is also a six-month, two terms course, with modules in Security Threats and Challenges in the Law Enforcement Environment; and Law Enforcement Intelligence Practice and Policy. This programme differs from the PG Cert in Transnational Organised Crime in that it is delivered completely online through access to our Virtual Learning Environment, supplemented by online group discussions and tutorials. Again, students can proceed on to a full Master’s option after completion of the PG Cert, either in the Transnational Organised Crime programme, or through our two other taught MA programmes: Security and Intelligence Studies; and Security, Intelligence and Diplomacy. For all enquiries about these and related programmes, please feel free to contact the BUCSIS Director, Prof. Julian Richards, on [email protected]. A visit to our beautiful campus in Buckingham is also warmly welcomed.
