For the first time, the Crime Survey for England and Wales 2020 incorporated perceptions and questions asked of victims of crime. The findings were mixed, with some evidence of positive interactions between victims and criminal justice practitioners, however, there has been growing victim dissatisfaction in the handling of their cases. The enforcement of the New Victims’ Code signals a step in the right direction to provide better support to victims. As we begin to return to a sense of normality, now is an opportune moment to evaluate lessons learnt during lockdown and consider ways to improve victim support services and their experiences of the criminal justice system.

  • 78% of victims surveyed in 2018-2019 were satisfied with their contact with victims’ services
  • 6% of victims were satisfied with their initial contact with the police in 2020
  • In 2020, 52.2% of victims didn’t think the police kept them well informed about progress in the case
  • 1 in 5 victims did not report crimes as they did not think the police would be interested
