Anti-social behaviour (ASB) has continued to rise within communities since the first national lockdown in March 2020. A YouGov poll in December 2020 showed that 4 in 10 respondents found ASB to be a problem where they lived, and a further 36% said that ASB had gotten worse since lockdown. To tackle this rise, various Government departments have published action plans for local authorities, housing associations, police and partner organisations to tackle and prevent anti-social behaviour. While there is a range of good practices across the public sector, victim support charities and experts are still calling for a greater focus on early intervention and partnership working to curb the increase in anti-social behaviour.

  • The Crime Survey of England and Wales found that around 19.1 million people suffered from anti-social behaviour in the past year, a rise of 15.56 million from 2011-2012
  • Victim Support recorded a 41% increase in victims being referred or self-referring for support as a result of ASB
  • 54% of anti-social behaviour was not reported to anyone between March-August 2020
  • 59% of people who reported ASB to their housing association or landlord were dissatisfied with how the issue was handled
